A LITTLE BIT ABOUT VOC DATA: (Volatile Organic Compounds)

What are these compounds? The EPA has a list of certain solvents and compounds that release vapors into the air, and many of these are harmful to the people using these compounds, or to the ozone layer, etc. This is an extensive list, but to give the reader a general idea we are speaking of Toluenes, Ketones, Alcohols, Clorinated compounds such as Tricloroethanes, and many others. Most of these are found in paints and are sometimes are called "solvents". Some are used as fire retardants, others as carriers to keep certain plastics or polymers in liquid form.

Most of the industries that have to comply to all the Federal regulations have independent laboritories test their products, and we here at GLO Industries follow this format.

The PAL Oil System has only one product that may have required this test and that is our Metal PAL Preservative. We had those tests run anyway for the Navy, and the Military also re-tests as a check. Most limits set for these various dangerous compounds are based upon parts per million. That is not good enough for our standards. Our products are based on parts per BILLION OR TRILLION.

Metal PAL Preservative example: OSHA / EPA TARGETED VOLATILE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS :
LESS THAN &l; trillion; 5.3 GRAMS PER LITER; LESS THAN &l; trillion;
0 (Trace) CLOR. HYDRO. LESS THAN 1 trillion 0.18 OZ. PER POUND; LESS THAN &l; trillion;
1.4 FL. OZ PER GALLON; LESS THAN &l; trillion;
0.08 LBS. PER GAL. (Total)

Now just what does this mean to you? It means if you buy a gallon of plastic or oil based paint and it scales in at ten pounds, on the average it is going to release 5 pounds of volatile vapors into the air. If you buy a gallon of Metal PAL Preservative, it will only release 1.3 OUNCES of these vapors into the air, and most of these are non-hazardous.

We have been asked many times what is the "safest solvent" to use. The answer is water! Are you surprised? Yes, water is most often called the universal solvent. Of course if the water has been clorinated, such as city drinking water which in some cases has also been treated with sodium floride, then mixed with noodles that have a teaspoon of cooking oil added plus flavoring, and then everything is boiled... you will have created a "clorinated" hydrocarbon somewhere. Most likely mom calls it "soup"...

The CFR's are government guidelines and the ones we have listed are for shipyards and ships, which is resonable for PAL products are Marine Oils. The list of CFR's our products would comply to would fill a book. If you require a different classification, check the government guidelines first. If you already have a classification you should know if PAL products fall into your catagory by checking the MSDS sheet data. If you do not know how to do this, check the Federal Government listings out on the Web and ask the proper agency for help.

NATIONAL FIRE FIGHTING CODE

All PAL Products come under this classification: Harzards: 0, Health: 0-2, Treat as combustible mineral oil or #2 fuel. Spontaneous combustion point unknown, but extremely high.
