Pal Oil System Corrosion Conference Report

The 1997 Corrosion Conference hosted by the US Navy in Louisville, Kentucky, is now history and progress in the war against corrosion continues grimly forward, with industrial and military personnel eliminating all the toxic wastes that they can by replacing known problematic chemicals with environmentally less harmful ones. All of the military services were represented at the conference, exchanging information that old inter service rivalries had previously restricted, and they all were concerned about toxic substances.

We have a list of 600 harmful chemicals that have to be targeted, and we are still working on the first twelve... I will mention at this time that the PAL Oil System does not contain any of the above mentioned hazards in the 600 list. How soon will this be over? How long is it going to take to remove these hazards from industry? Years....

There are many products the consumer automatically reaches for on the shelf that contain these very chemicals, and the military can not use them. You, the general consumer, can and do use these toxic items... While the men and women in the military work hard at cleaning up the mess the government facilities had made, the American consumer keeps filling his garbage with aerosol cans, toxic paint, toxic gun cleaners and insecticides, while watching the military cutbacks occurring daily.

Also gone from the scene is the over abundant military manpower. The maintenance load has not changed, so all personnel have to work twice as hard at it just to stay even with their routine service lists, as manning has been reduced in some areas to less than 50%. We want ships to last 50 years for navy use, and that will equate to another 30 years for possible civilian use after the craft is retired. An 80 year vessel built tough, cheap and durable requiring little or no maintenance, and one which is environmentally friendly. This is why the conference took place...

We had the opportunity to see some wonderful products while we were there, products that would virtually eliminate all rust and corrosion under normal circumstances and would work forever, if the instructions were closely followed. Many are compatible with each other and could be used as an effective full spectrum treatment, a form of chemotherapy if we may so equate, to problematic high corrosive areas. While no one product in itself may be the answer, two or three applied in a specific order would do the job almost permanently.

Now here is the catch! We have yet to fully determine just which products these are and the order of use! How is this done? We all have to test and make recommendations to the others as we "zero in". Of all the groups represented, we, GLO Industries Inc., were the only people who specialized in taking things apart, preserving them and keeping the items serviceable, which was the content of John Dougherty's presentation titled "Products That Penetrate Corrosion". If you cannot get badly corroded assemblies apart without damaging them farther, how are you going to fix these pieces of equipment? The PAL Oil System works because of three great truisms: PAL Products works just as the labels say they do... If you can't get something apart, how can you fix it?.... Why waits hours or days when the job can be done in minutes or seconds!... One, two, three... Penetrate, preserve, protect! Older oil technology did not perform that well for this purpose, but times have changed and so has the technology that the PAL Oil System brings into action. Both industry and the military have to be updated and reeducated, tuned to these sweeping new changes that GLO Industries brings to the machinists of the world.

Once these assemblies are taken apart, once PAL Oils have stopped the corrosion and bought the maintenance people some time, the other products from the conference enter in. Cleaned, painted and restored with all the properly graded nuts, bolts and lock washers, as well as the proper seals, these carefully rebuilt units are preserve stored or placed immediately back into service.

There is only one thing that prevents the above logical pattern from emerging. While the above products may already be in the government catalog, the fleet or maintenance personnel are not aware of them or of the possible usage combinations that will virtually eliminate their problems. We are all working on this right now, and the Internet is going to be highly important as a coordinating tool, right down to the outright purchasing by the supply people. This is what the corrosion conference is really about... getting the information out to the troops in both private and government sectors, and gearing up for a tremendous information exchange between the military and the private sector, right down to each household unit on the net. The Military needs your help. If you know of good safe products that may have military application, right down to soaps and detergents, or if there is a small industry in your area that has something outstanding to offer, let the military know about it!

If you have something in mind, something you may have fooled around with but have not considered marketing it until now, get yourself a list of the 600 bad things the military has listed and make sure your product or products do not contain any of them. If the project in question still works well after you have eliminated all the hazards, and you have a prototype for testing, contact the military because it will still take a few years before they become comfortable with the idea during an extensive testing program. (We shall have no wine before its time...)

The program was very interesting and I learned quite a bit about certain current practices now employed by industry to curtail environmental stresses. I saw some beautiful products made from pure titanium, and inspected special plastic nuts and bolts that were not only strong, but totally corrosion resistant. There were items that were used to chemically remove rust, or prevent electrolysis between dissimilar metals when bolted or bonded together. Plating processes were discussed as well as thermo setting powder paints. Television sets ran immersed in water, deck tools had vacuum hoses connected to keep the air dust free, and there were hand cleaners, hepa air filters, and special tapes or materials which gave off continuous non-toxic vapors that contained corrosion inhibitors. These were to be used in junction boxes and other sealed electrical devices. I never saw one bad product at the 1997 Navy Corrosion Conference. What I did see there was a lot of hope for our country as far as the environmental issues being addressed...

In March of 1998 Admiral Herb Kaler is going to enter into the picture, and I never heard so much as one negative word about this occurrence, in fact the general consensus of opinion was totally opposite. I spoke to him very briefly and my gut feeling was this man was very good at his job, and likable also. We here at GLO Industries are looking forward to next year, when the admiral can spend a little more time examining the specifics. This man realizes the differences between lab personnel and procedures, as opposed to actual battlefield conditions encountered by busy shipboard personnel...

The Navy really was a wonderful host, and the staff at the Holiday Inn was excellent. We here at GLO Industries, the home of the PAL Oil System, are glad that we too are involved in fighting the war against rust and corrosion. We have good allies and a lot of them....

Sincerely, Allen D. Furford
