4Elma Cronicle. "Daily stays young at 95 - Elma - Longevity seems to be a trait in the Frank Daily family. Daily, who will be 95 years old in May, said his father and mother both lived into thier 90's and two of his brothers and one sister were near the 90 mark when they passed away. One younger brother is still living in North Dakota. Daily has lived in the Elma area since 1946, buying a small farm in South Union after his second retirement following World War II. He had been employed for many years as a electrician for two Aberdeen firms and retired when he was 65 years old. But shortly after his retirement, the war broke out and he went back to work at the shipyards in Aberdeen for five years. In 1882, when he was six years old, Dailys parents moved from Illinois to Hope, North Dakota, where they homesteaded. He said his parents had a lot of farm machinery and since it was scarce in North Dakota, his father had it shipped to their new home in a boxcar. His father was a county commissioner for many years at Fargo, North Dakota. He said as a youngster, he and his brothers would go out and pickup buffalo bones and sell them to a local sugar refinery. "They used the bones in refining brown sugar. They paid $20 a ton for the bones," he said. All five of the Daily children were graduated from college. Frank Daily attended what was then called the agriculture college at Fargo and played on the college football team. He said that in the spring when the ducks and geese migrated north he and his brothers would go hunting. His latest hunting exploit was about four years ago, when a bear that had been robbing his bees was caught near Daily's house. Daily attempted to kill him with a .22 calibre rifle. Not succeeding he had a neighbor come down and dispose of the animal. "I was getting a littel excited-along with the bear-and decided I needed a bigger gun," he commented. After he left college, he was employed in Havre, Montana, for the Great Northern railroad as a electrician at their roundhouse. Daily said he installed the first "incandescent" or electric lights in the Great Northern trains. Dialy was married in Havre and in 1912 moved his family to Seattle where he and a partner set up an electrical shop. He later moved to the Grays Harbor area where his four girls and one boy were raised. Twenty-six years ago Daily moved to his South Union farm where he has spent his time raising a half-acre garden and several hives of bees. With five children, 17 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren Daily never has any trouble getting rid of his garden produce. His daughter, Mrs. E.M. Cross, said he also furnished them all with berries, fruit and honey. Daily is also well known to the South Union children for his pumpkins and other goodies he gives them when they visit him. As a youngster, he purchased a $2 violin from a mail order catalog, which he and a brother learned to play by reading the dictionary. "One of our school teachers knew how to play the violin also and he helped us take ours apart and work it over to produce a fine sounding instrument," he said. He later learned to play the mandolin and in later yeras, Mrs. Cross said, friends would gather at a home for an evening of music and dancing. "People just don't do those things anymore. We youngsters use to have a great time, when our parents got together for their music nights," she remarked. At 82 years of age Daily decided he wanted to learn television repair, so took a correspondence course. Since that time he has spent many enjoyable hours working with sets his family has given him. Mrs. Cross told of the time when her father fell 16 feet out of one of his fruit trees, while pruning it. "Dad didn't keep his weekly visit to my place. He was always at my home by noon on Friday. That day he didn't come so I drove out to the farm. I found him in bed unable to get up. I took him to a Seattle hospital for a checkup." After falling Daily had made it into his house and went to bed. He had no telephone at that time, she said. Mrs. Cross continued, "I filled out the hospital admittance slip and listed cause as falling 16 feet from a tree and his age as 90." The hospital clerk, after reading the form said 'you mean 69 not 90.' I said no '90 years old." The only ill effect from the fall was a slight fracture of a finger. Daily uses glasses for reading, but passed his driver's test with flying colors last year. He siad that the license examiner had him take the written test, eye test, heart check-up and drivers test. "I drove the patrolman out to my home for the driving test," he said. Mr. Daily hasn't been feeling too well this past month and has been staying with his daughter, but is looking forward to when he will be able to return to his farm at South Union."
