Carl Spurgeon, Coordinator
Washington Motorcycle Safety Program

Mr. Spurgeon,

I am writing this letter to thank you and the State of Washington for your efforts in promoting safe motorcycle riding in our State.  I recently purchased a motorcycle and in doing such fulfilled a 40-year dream.  Unfortunately, the bike fell over on me three times during the first two weeks of ownership.

I guess I’m a slow learner, but with subtle direction from the Aberdeen Department of Licensing I ended up being enrolled in the Grays Harbor Motorcycle Education LLC (GHME, LLC’s) BRC class.  At the end of the class it was clear to the instructors (Rick and Mario) and to me that I did not have enough skills to achieve a passing grade on the skills test.  I did come away from the first class with new insight’s, as well as knowledge of what I should be practicing.  The instructors recommended I use my student driving permit privileges to gain at least 1,000 miles driving experience.

Following 1,000 miles of driving experience and daily practice, I enrolled in the same class again.  I was surprised by how much more I learned in the second class.  Ideas and concepts on top of those learned in the first class.   The second class was so meaningful as a learning experience, I am now considering the same class a third time. I did pass the skills test on try #2.

It is sad to say, but I have received a lot of wrong advice about riding a motorcycle from well meaning friends.  I have learned to ask Rick and Mario every time some situation comes to my mind.  In my new experience, they have been “right on” each and every time.  I have found them to be skilled in their methods, direct in their presentations, and committed to the objective of safety.

In my life experience, I have seen so many riders like myself just get on a bike and ride.  The consequences have been unfortunate.  I now tell anyone I meet to take the BRC course from GHME, LLC before they even think of sitting on a bike alone.

I thank you Mr. Spurgeon and the State of Washington for developing a path of learning that makes driving a motorcycle as safe as it can possibly be.

Sincerely,

Craig G.
