Whale Watching"Thar she blows!" |
"Great getaway - |
You are sitting in the front room of your cottage at the Harbor Resort, gazing out the window at sea birds skimming the water, when suddenly there is a spout of water signifying the presence of a gray whale. His back breaks the water. With a flip of his tail, the majestic creature disappears in the waters around Buoy 7 "the whale hole," located a couple hundred feet outside your window.
Within a few minutes there are several whale watching boats coasting into the area looking for the site you just witnessed while standing in your bathrobe drinking your morning cup of coffee. Whales have migrated by Westport for centuries but recently they have put Westport on the map as the best place to see gray whales in Washington. Each spring thousands of whales make their way north from Baja, Mexico to the Arctic, where they will spend the summer. They pass close to land in the spring, but stay farther out on their return in the fall. March and April are prime whale watching months. Charter boats offer two-and-a-half-hour tours for about $25. Experienced skippers glide their boats up to the majestic creatures. Some whales even seem to enjoy the human attention. The ones that don’t make themselves scarce. There are more than a dozen charters offering whale watching tours, including Deep Sea Charters, who graciously supplied us with these photos. You can reach Deep Sea Charters February through October by calling 1-800-562-0151. Whether you come to see whales from your room or to go on a charter, make the Harbor Resort your whale watching headquarters. |
