In recent years Westport has become surf central for the rugged athletes who dare to test their skills against the cold Pacific waves. Westport has become a magnet for a uniquely northwest brand of outdoor enthusiasts. Wet suit wearing daredevils challenge the icy waves throughout the year, seeming to pride themselves on a particularly challenging form of the sport. The most popular places to surf are Westhaven State Park, about two miles from the Harbor Resort and the rock jetty, just a few steps from the resort. In August hundreds flock to town for the Longboard Classic. In this two-day event surfers compete in a variety of classes. The classic surfboard event draws competitors from throughout the world.
