CrabbingCrabbing -- A sport for the entire family. |
"Great crabbing." |
The sun is setting, painting the sky and backlit clouds a beautiful blend of red and purple. The gulls swoop and enviously eye your catch - sweet
Dungeness crab that you are just pulling from the pot of boiling water. A moment later you are popping the succulent crab meat into your mouth, feeling the ocean breeze on your face and realizing the joy of eating what
you yourself harvested from the sea.
Westport is the premier crabbing spot on the West Coast and the Harbor Resort is the sport crabbing headquarters in Westport. Guests are literally within a few yards of the Westport Boat Basin, which is open year-round to recreational crabbing. You can buy your shellfish license ($6), rent your crab ring ($5) and get crabbing advice (free) all in one stop. The sport is surprisingly easy and youngsters are almost assured to catch something. You bait your crab ring, which is basically a funnel made with net sides, and toss it in the water. It sinks to the bottom, where it lays flat and the crabs crawl in to get the bait. You pull up the ring, catching the crab inside. Since you are only allowed to keep mature males, some of the catch must be released. For the younger set, the thrill is in catching these fascinating creatures, regardless of their size. Cooking crab is equally easy. A pot of water seasoned with Grandpa Ed's Crab Fixin's is brought to a rolling boil, the crabs dropped in and 20 minutes later dinner is served. |
