Hoquiam Lions Club Projects

*************************************

Our main "fund raising" projects are :

Rain Derby : Tickets are sold to the public for guesses predicting the annual rainfall in Hoquiam. Prizes totaling $1800, are awarded to winners. If a person guesses the EXACT Annual AND December rainfall, an additional $4000 bonus will be added to the $1000 top prize for a total of $5000. This fund raiser has been an annual event for over 50 years.

Fireworks sales : The Club operates a stand for selling fireworks to the public during the week of July 4th. The stand is staffed by Lions members 11 hours each day.

Salmon Barbeque : Each September in the City of Hoquiam, there is a one day celebration called Logger's Playday. It's Hoquiam's biggest day of the year. Club members cook and sell 500-600 barbequed salmon dinners to the public this day.

Logger's Playday Concession Stand : The Club operates a sandwich and refreshment stand during the actual Logger's Show. 5000+ attend this show where contests of logging skills are held.

Entertainment Books : Books containing discount promotional coupons from businesses in the Pacific Northwest are sold to the public. The businesses include hotels, motels, restaurants, etc. (Good little money maker)

News Print recycling : The Club has a paper "drop" for newspapers, magazines, etc. ...this is a double plus...not only does it provide revenue for the Club, further, it helps preserve our natural resource...TREES.

White Cane Sales : The Club members really turn out for this event and we do a terrific job with this fund raiser. It is our Club's policy to match all monies taken in and donate it to the sight program.

Service Activities :

Youth Program : We support a number of youth programs through the schools and local youth groups. Each month, at a regular meeting, we honor a high school senior boy and girl chosen for their scholastic and school activities achievements. We award them each $100 toward their college expenses. We donate, on an annual basis, to a Drug & Alcohol Awareness Program at the local Middle school.

Sight Conservation and Blind : Together with our normal assistance for the blind, we further provide glasses for needy children and adults.

Lions Park : In 1949 the Hoquiam Lions purchased a 13 acre site and developed a Park for the people of the City of Hoquiam. In 1980 we donated the Park to the City to be administered by the Parks Department. We continue to provide playground equipment and other facilities at the park.

Highway clean-up : The Club participates in Washington State's "Adopt-a-Highway" program by keeping a two-mile section of highway free of litter.

Poinsettia Project : Early in December the Club purchases and the members distribute Christmas gifts of 150 poinsettia plants to patients in local nursing homes.

Community Picnic : The Club takes an active part in an annual Community picnic where over 1000 people are served a free picnic lunch.

Christmas in April :  Each year the local "Christmas in April" Committee chooses several houses in our community that are in need of repair. These homes are owned by elderly or infirmed, low income families. Our Club donates both financial support and manual labor to this project.

Lions International and District : The Club supports several International and District Programs. Six Hoquiam Lions have received the Melvin Jones Award.
