The first meeting in May opened by recognizing the Lions with birthday's this month. They are : Lions Lee Stage, Bob Aiken, Harold Schmidtke, Dee Johnson and Roger Barbo. King Lion Roger suggested that Lion Dr. Paul Prichard lead the birthday serenade as Lion Harold was one of the honorees. All birthday Lions in attendance were fined appropriately.
We had three
visitors from the Montesano Lions Club with us today. One of the reasons they
chose to grace our meeting, was to retrieve their Club's bell, and gavel. King
Lion Roger and Secretary Jerry have developed quite a penchant for "swiping"
Lions paraphernalia from the Club's they visit. Our Montesano guests are:

King Lion Roger announced the passing of two Hoquiam Lions. He asked that we observe a moment of silent commemoration for: Lion Warren Dobbins, the last Charter Member of our Club, and for Lion Bob Orr. They were truly caring people and great Lions.
King Lion Roger reported that our two day White Canes Days outing produced $1200 in donations. With our Club matching these donations, we will be sending a check for $2400 to the Lions Sight Committee. Roger thanked all Lions who participated.
Finally, it was great to have Lion Helge in attendance today. Helge announced that today marks his 70th year as a Ham Radio operator. He was a little put off that they wouldn't let him use his transmitter while in the re-hab unit. It seems that his transmissions made electronic monitoring equipment do "funny things".
Having no program today, we drew the attendance pot. And the winner is.....Lion Bill Jensen.
May 13, 2003
Whoa!!....lots of chairs filled today. We had two visitors (and prospective Lions) today; Jamie Rubel and Ryan Graves. Jamie and Ryan are to be married in a few days. In honor of their pending nuptials, Lion Harold lead us in the very romantic ballad....Won't You Come Home Bill Bailey.

The tune for this last two weeks was...Harbor Lights. From 13 participants, Lion Ken Miller's name was drawn as the winner. The next tune will be much more difficult as it was suggested by a "want-to-be-a-Lion", Rotarian Bob Hyde.
Lion Jack Shrauger shared with us an article from that great Eastern Washington publication...The Loon Lake Times. The article pertained to an annual "Bare Buns Fun Run" sponsored by a family(?) nudist resort. This is the only clothing optional 5K run in America. Jack suggested that this writer participate in the event...yeah right. (Seeing me naked would be a great advertisement for birth control) However there is one of our members who has, under the pretext of cardiac re-hab, been secretly training for this event. I promised not to reveal his name and I never break a promise to George Reay.
Our friend (and prospective Lion) Matt Ballance, Student Counselor at HHS introduced our Students of the Month for May. The honorees are:
Ian
Christopherson a senior at HHS. He has been involved with Varsity golf,
wrestling, and track. Ian is a member of the National Honor Society and is a
World Class Scholar. Out side of school, he is involved in the Foodball
competition, has helped with Christmas in April, and is a volunteer in the
feeding the hungry program. He has a 3.4 GPA and plans to attend WSU in the
fall. Ian is the son of Ken and Carol Windell.
Megan Gibbons
is also a senior at HHS. She participated in Varsity soccer, and track. Megan is
a World Class Scholar and is a member of the National Honor Society. Outside of
school she is involved in the Relay for Life Cancer Walk, Foodball, and
Christmas in April. She also works with Zoo Corps at the Woodland Park Zoo on
the weekends, helping show animals to children. She enjoys Art, and being
creative. With a 3.898, she plans to attend WSU in the fall. Megan is the
daughter of Bill and Linda Gibbons
After an entire softball season of hearing about the Montesano Bulldog's Lady Softball team, we finally had the chance to meet the team members. Lions Bob and Joan Smiley arranged for the them to be our program for today. Their coach Dennis Prante told of his teams dedication to the sport and to academics as well. (Every member of this championship team has a 3.5 GPA or higher) With a record of 11 wins, 2 losses this year, the Lady Bulldogs were the Evergreen League Champs. This is not new for these gals, they have been champions for several years. Even though they soundly "whupped" our Hoquiam Grizzly girls on several occasions, we salute them and wish them continuing success in years to come.

(left to right) - Sara Badgley, Coach Prante, Jenna Bellamy, Erica Smiley, Rikki
Johnson and Stephanie Smiley.
da Pot - Lion Wes Harris' name was drawn.....however Wes was gone.

(Reported by
Lion Dr. Paul Prichard)
The meeting was opened on time and under budget by King Lion Roger Smith. Attendance was small probably due to weather conditions and the fact that Lion Jerry Erickson was working on the Habitat for Humanity Project.
Lion Bob Smiley paid his fine and reported that the Montesano Softball team beat Elma by a score of 8-1. Those grandkids of his are a big source of income for the club.
Lion Secretary Jerry passed around the sign up sheet for the June 19th Installation Dinner. The event will be held at the Hoquiam Elks Lodge at 6:00 pm. Happy hour then and dinner at 7:00 pm. There will be entertainment—soon to be announced. Also, Ocean Shores has invited us to attend their installation/charter party June 26th at their clubhouse.
He also passed out the Lion of the Year ballots—voting was hot, heavy and exciting.
King Lion Roger announced there would be an auction at next Tuesday’s meeting for a giant talking Husky Dawg. Wazzu grads will be allowed to bid. The winner will be allowed to play the recording prior to each remaining meeting of Lion Roger’s term! GO DAWGS.
Lion Sam Coleman turned in $35.00 from the mint sale project.
The program today was a delightful slide show with educational narrative of a recent cruise to Alaska by Lions Helge Erickson and Joann Frazer.
The beauty and majesty of that area was well shown by this
presentation. The glaciers and mountain peaks were dazzling. Very prominent
also were the many pictures of the myriad of saloons and bars in the Klondike
and surrounding area. We were astounded to learn of the many bars on the
Norwegian Queen.
Thank you both for a very informative program.

As King Lion Roger called the last meeting of May to order, I couldn't help thinking....geez, it seems like only three weeks ago that it was the first meeting of May. Oh well, time flies when your having fun.
The tune for the past two weeks was....Purple People Eater. From the 5 correct guesses, Lion Dr. Paul Prichard's name was drawn. Sadly Paul was absent and didn't get his gift certificate.
Lion Dean Parsons reported that his committee has dispersed $1400 to the Twin Harbors Disability group for the purchase of computer readers for the sight-impaired.....Lion Sam Coleman turned in 38 pairs of donated eyeglasses. Sam has set up a collection point at the Islander Restaurant in Westport that has proven to be very productive.
The speaker for
today was Laurie Howard, Woodshop Vocational Teacher at HHS. She told of
her background and qualifications, and gave us an overview of the many
vocational projects involving the young people at school. Her main topic today
was the ambitious project of making ballpoint pens.... Yep, I said ballpoint
pens.
As we all know, the old High School was demolished.
During the demolition, many people "picked the bones" of the old School seeking
memorabilia. (a piece of history, if you will) As a class project, Laurie
thought that there has to be something that could be made from materials from
the school that people would purchase as their piece of history. Several groups
were doing the "brick thing", so she decided upon a more ambitious
project...making pens. She cajoled the demolition people into giving her
the maple flooring. Using a wood lathe to fashion the barrel of the pen, and
buying the pen parts, her class was in the pen manufacturing business.
The end
product, of this endeavor, is a pen set that is made from a part of the old
Hoquiam High School. On the inside lid of the box is a picture and short
biography of HHS. The pen set sells for $25.00.
For those of you who are thinking...how much
is this costing the School District (taxpayers)...worry no longer. So far this
project has had gross sales of $11,000+ with a NET of approximately $7,000.
Thanks Laurie for a very enlightening program.
da Pot - Winners may come and winners may go...but none are as happy as this "Old Cro".....Lion Rudy Spanich.
