July 1, 2003

Reported by Lion Paul D. Prichard

The meeting was opened by new King Lion Dean Parsons – albeit 3 minutes and 55 seconds late!

Lion Joan Smiley advised that she has sent ‘rapid recovery’ cards to Diane Kogin and to Nola Duvall.  We all wish you both speedy returns to health and activities.

Lion Harold snoozed through the singing of ‘Happy Birthday’ for the July Birthday boys.

Those marking a years’ advancement in age are Bob Smiley, Don Little and Bill Jensen.  May you all have many more annual celebrations.

Guests today were new member prospects Matt Balance and Joe Haek.  In addition, Zone Chairman John Martin from the Ocean Shores Lions was a visitor.  He presented Lion Dean with a to do list and a traveling gavel.

Reports:
  1.
Dick Brown told us that for the first day of operation the fireworks stand sold over $1200 worth of merchandise – well ahead of last year.
  2.
Ed Wayman advised that everything was on track for the Salmon BBQ.  He requested help in repairing the pits and some of the sheet metal was in poor shape.

Program  - Lion Jack Strom introduced County Commissioner Al Carter who reported on several projects the county has in the hopper.
Al was appointed to the commission to replace a member who had resigned.  His experience includes working in the grocery industry and several years at ITT.  His expertise is in “common sense” project management.
The county has experienced a revenue shortfall of $1 million dollars at the first of the year.  It is now down to half that amount.  Even thought some layoffs and non-replacement of employees has been forced on the county the temporary summer jobs have still been available due to receipt of grant monies.
Negotiations are currently underway with the Sheriff’s deputy’s union while next year the contract with the Association of Municipal Employees will be up for renewal.
Building permits are on the increase this year.
DSL should be available either with the PUD or Comcast in the near future.
The Public Development Agency (PDA) is actively seeking small companies to locate in Hoquiam, primarily because we do not have adequate facilities for major ones.
Pacific Beach has completed its new sewer and water systems with major help from the EPA and other grant money.  A developer wants to build 500 homes near Santa Claus Corner.  This project will consist of fancy cabins and summer type homes in the $100 - $150 K range.  He noted that the $40 K building permit has been paid.  There are 4 large lots just north of the Naval Station that are in the process of development. The town is now considering incorporating sometime soon.
There is an aggressive abatement program in effect.  In Pacific Beach many hulk cars have been hauled at the owner’s expense. In the Sunset Beach area the old railroad right of way will be developed once ownership of the parcel can be settled.
Ocean Shores continues to have problems siting the new convention center and the PFD is working with them to resolve the situation now that the original developer has bowed out.
Thank you Commissioner Carter for a substantive report.

The remaining programs for July are: July 8, County Assessor’s’ Office concerning salvage; July 15, Pete Papac on big game hunting in Africa; July 22, the Seventh Street Kids preview of the new show opening the following weekend; July 29, O.G. Shaw from Beverton, OR – topic to be announced (a big surprise).

THE POT WAS WON BY LION PAST PRESIDENT ROGER SMITH

 See you all next week!

July 15, 2003

King Lion Dean Parsons opened the meeting 2 minutes early this week – this balances out the 2 minutes late last week.  Good show!  There were no guests.
Lion Bill Jensen paid his birthday fine and was serenaded by the club.  Happy Birthday Bill!

Diane Kogin is at home recovering from her recent surgery.  We wish you a speedy return to good health.

Rich Brown reported on the fireworks sales.  He let us know that the $9320.41 in sales surpassed last year by $1265.42.  This earned a net profit of $4473.80 less $50.00 from an account-closed check, which he is trying to collect.

Lion Jerry Schaefer introduced the program participants.  They were Chief Deputy Assessor Claudia Kalles and Chief Appraiser Jamie Hanny.  They advised us how the county figures assessments for individual properties in the county.  We learned that only good clean sales were counted for purposes of assessments.  No family and charitable sales are included.  The average assessed value is 93% of fair market value.
They described the duties of the 16 persons employed in the office and explained the 4 year cycle of appraising.  Several explanatory handouts were distributed.  The county has an excellent web site at which all real estate transactions, locations, valuations and much other valuable information may be found.

The web site is www.co.grays-harbor.wa.us. This site may be searched by address, legal description or parcel number.

The Pot: Lion Ricky Thomas – not present due to Armed Forces duty in the Gulf.

July 15, 2003

This old "house-husband/nurse" writer  is happy to report that my patient, Diane, is getting stronger with each passing day and I am now able to resume my duties to the Club. Our Club owes Lion Paul Prichard a hearty Well Done for unhesitatingly stepping in and assuming the reporting duties....Thanks Paul.

With the bell ringing and Lions singing, the meeting was underway. The meeting was well attended and as an added bonus Lions Schaefer, Strom and Jones brought their lovely ladies as our guests today.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the tune of the past few weeks, Put on a Happy Face, went by the way of "no savvy".  No winner was declared, however the show must go on and there will be a new tune this week.

After Lion Rudy Spanich gave us a lesson in ethnicity, we had these announcements: Lion Jerry Erickson reminded us that our section of adopted highway needs cleaning. He will set the time and inform us....Lion George Reay made a plea for book donations for the Library. Take your donated books to the library or give George a call (532-6139) and he will pick them up....Lion Rich Brown gave his final report on the fireworks sales and thanked all Lions who volunteered. (Lions Brown and Lanning, as always, did a super job)

In his inimitable, articulate style, Lion Jerry Schaefer introduced our program for today...Pete and Virginia Papac. Pete, a retired logger from Montesano, is a avid hunter who has traveled the world in search of game animals. He and his wife Virginia (also an avid hunter) shared some of their experiences with us this day.
Pete has taken 286 different species of animals, ranging from ducks to elephants, in the 30 years that he has been hunting.  This may lead some to think that Pete kills just for trophies...nothing could be further from the truth. Hunting seasons, in many areas of the world, are necessary to reduce over-population of various animals. Pete states, "None of the meat ever goes to waste!" "What is not consumed by the hunters, is shared with the local people."  He has received many awards for his efforts in conservation and he and Virginia have made many friends throughout the world.
As mentioned before, Pete and Virginia have hunted on all continents (excluding Antarctica) on this earth. Although they have made 40 hunting trips to Russia, they still like Africa the best. He told several interesting stories of his African adventures, including how respectful the African people are towards Americans.
  A very interesting program indeed.
[perhaps, if we can make satisfactory arrangements, we could have one of our meetings at Pete's trophy room in Monte ???]

da Pot - Dee Johnson's name was drawn however Dee was not here today. (probably a good thing...as the pot was filled with Dee's IOU's)

If he pulls this off, we are never going to hear the end of it!!!

July 22, 2003

Upon calling the meeting to order, King Lion Dean went straight to our small amount of business of the day. (as close to business as this free-spirited Club can come)

Lion George Reay introduced his guest, Jack Dean from Anchorage, AK. On a previous visit, we imposed upon Jack to give us a program about his business in Alaska....and still he returned for a visit.  Go figure!

Lion Jerry Erickson announced that the 109 spur clean-up has be postponed and will inform us when it is rescheduled. ...Lion Rudy gave us an updated report on Lion Carroll Wayman. Carroll's surgery had to be redone. (perhaps a few more of us can give him a visit while he is on the mend?)...Having nothing further, we went into our program.

Our program for today, arranged by Lion Paul Prichard, was one that we look  forward to each year....A preview of the current year's 7th Street Kids musical production
Tobi Ingram, a member of the 7th St. Kids Board of Directors, gave a short history of the 7th St Kids, and reminded us that this is the 12th year for the annual production. She acknowledged the many adult members of the production and thanked them for their dedication to the young people of our community.
We were then treated to a preview of several musical numbers that are in this year's production of...The Music Man Junior. Like most of you, this writer is always amazed at the very professional manner in which these young people...ages 6-16...entertain their audience.
(Pictures will be posted in the Club's photo album very soon)

da Pot - Lion Rich Brown's name was drawn, however Rich is still recuperating from the fireworks sales and was not in attendance.

July 29, 2003

A rather sparse gathering of Lions responded to the opening bell on this day. Given the beautiful weather, it was amazing that we has as many as we did. We even forgot to have Lion Harold lead us in song....now that's the height of summer doldrums.

The tune of the fortnight was...By the Light of the Silvery Moon. The winner is Lion Jerry Erickson.

Calling All Lions: Lion Jerry Erickson called for a highway clean-up crew for Thursday, 2:00 PM. Our Highway 109 spur needs a summer cleaning. ....Lion Ed Wayman passed around a Salmon Barbecue sign-up sheet and stated that we need more volunteers this year. So get your spouse, friend, or relative and volunteer for this priority Lions function.

Our program today was Ozzie Shaw, a fitness consultant from Beaverton, OR.  Ozzie has several college degrees, including business, theology, and physical fitness. His company, O. G. Shaw Fitness Consultants, has many consulting contracts with various firms and professional sports teams. They travel the U.S. teaching and lecturing with regard to the need for physical fitness programs and how to implement the programs.
Today he addressed the need for fitness training throughout our lives with special emphasis on senior citizen conditioning.  He showed us several techniques and equipment used to promote senior fitness.
After answering several questions, he concluded his talk and drew the attendance pot.

da Pot - Lion Joan Smiley's name was drawn.
