This is an enjoyable, nonfiction, story about the recovery of a defeated, war-torn country that was starved for life. Despite the lost war, lives, and fortunes, the Germans reorganized themselves and their government in record breaking time. They were supervised by the Allies, who lived amidst the same ruins, with very often the same shortages. The author, Jean Walters Gayle, shares her experiences as the dependant of one of the officers in charge of the Occupation. With honesty and wit she relates her friendships with royalty, her travels throughout Europe and the reality of this time.
