McCleary, Washington, was named after Henry McCleary (1861-1943), a classic timber baron who ran this camp as a one-man principality. He was an amazing figure who really deserves more historical attention.
We can trace to his great-grandfather, Andrew McCleary. He was born 1769/77 in Ireland. The McClearys are said to be Scots-Irish. Andrew immigrated to America and died 1852 in Guernsey County, Ohio.
The original McCleary farm is now under Salt Fork Lake, which was created by a dam in the 1950s. It is also in Amish country. Henry Julius McCleary was born 1803 in Uniontown, PA. He married Mary Boyd (ca. 1805-1878), a native of Ireland. Henry died in 1885.
Andrew McCleary was born 1834 in Ohio. He married Isabella McCartney (1840-1897) in 1860. Isabella's father, Henry McCartney, was born in Ireland. Andrew died in 1901 in Ohio. Andrew and Isabella had the following children, all born in Ohio:
William and Leonard also lived in McCleary, Washington. Henry McCleary married Ada Johnson (1861-1923) and then Hildur Simon. Henry McCleary himself said the names "Joseph, John, Henry, Andrew" were common ones in his branch. Also the name Michael. He also wrote that the McClearys tended to be mechanical in occupation rather than farmers.
