Dr.
Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats
by Richard H. Pitcairn
A classic natural
pet-care book from two celebrated veterinary specialists in
chemical-free nutrition, treatment, and natural healing for
pets, Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for
Dogs & Cats offers valuable natural and holistic advice
on a host of pet topics, including, but not limited to, diet,
exercise, environment, coping with a pet's death, and how to
care for a sick animal. In addition to their thorough discussion
of the above, Richard Pitcairn, D.V.M., and his wife, Susan
Hubble Pitcairn, M.S., offer a comprehensive "quick reference"
section on animal illnesses, organized alphabetically and including
a brief description of each illness, preventative measures that
may be taken, and holistic and natural treatment options for
both dogs and cats--treatments that should always be discussed
with one's vet before being used. Occasional line drawings,
informative graphs, and the Pitcairn's intelligent prose make
this guide a must-have for pet owners interested in a natural
lifestyle for their pets. --Amazon.com |

Dog
Owner's Home Veterinary Handbook
by Delbert G. Carlson
Open the front
cover and the first two pages you see contain the Index of Signs
and Symptoms, from Abdomen (painful, swollen, distended, and
tucked up) to Weight loss, Wheezing, and Whining (continual).
There's a comprehensive index in back, of course, running the
gamut from Abortion to Zinc-Responsive Dermatosis, which is
all very useful, but when your pooch is in pain, it's great
to be able to turn, with the minimum of folderol, to the page
that says to relax, it's nothing a bit of extra grooming won't
fix, or alternatively to hightail it over to the vet hospital.
It's a wonderful reference for any dog owner, with chapters
on emergencies (such as burns, dehydration, and poisoning),
as well as worms, infectious diseases, skin care, and canine
eyes, ears, and nose. There are chapters on the digestive, respiratory,
and circulatory systems, the nervous, musculoskeletal, and urinary
systems, plus dog sex, whelping, puppy pediatrics, geriatrics,
and chapters on cancers and medications. In short, it covers
every health dimension a dog owner might want to know more about,
identifies the possible causes, helps you determine the severity
of the condition, and indicates what treatments or actions to
take to best insure your dog's good health. --Amazon.com |

Surviving
Your Dog's Adolescence : A Positive Training Program
by Carol Lea Benjamin
As any parent knows,
adolescence is the most challenging part of raising a child.
However, as Carol Lea Benjamin proves in "Surviving Your Dog's
Adolescence," illustrative cartoons, pertinent case studies,
and good advice can certainly make that challenging age easier
to handle. As a professional dog trainer, Benjamin focuses her
advice on positive training techniques designed to help both
parent and teen through the tumultuous adolescent period. Many
of her insights are portrayed through the eyes of a canine,
and help to illustrate the types of thoughts entertained by
the teen dog. These range from the dog who responds to his owner's
calls of "Come" with "When Pigs Fly," to the dog who demonstrates
his tenacity by staking out a mole hill with a flag that says
"Never Say Die." Also included are techniques for effective
training, guidelines for appropriate dog-owner relationships,
and tips for dealing with specific dog "problems." Case studies
of real-life dogs offer substantial evidence to back up Benjamin's
recommendations. A must-read for any owner of an adolescent
dog, "Surviving Your Dog's Adolescence" can help any parent
understand the teen dog and help to provide guidelines that
result in a rewarding relationship for both dog and owner. --Amazon.com |

The
Evans Guide for Housetraining Your Dog
by Job Michael Evans
This has been
one the the most useful book I've read on housetraining your
dog. Micheal Evans makes it so easy to understand how to properly
housetrain your loveable fuzz ball. I love the way he explains
the psychology of how to quickly and easily let your dog know
who's the boss (Alpha), and how to get your dog to "do his business"
where you want it to be done. He also has a great chapter on
feeding schedules and what your dog should be eating and avoiding.
I was able to use advice from his book the same day I bought
it and got positive results that very same day. This is a "must
read" and "must use" book for those who want to housetrain their
dogs the right way! --Amazon.com Customer Reviews |

How
to Be Your Dog's Best Friend : A Training Manual for Dog Owners
by New Skete Monks
The Monks
of New Skete share their invaluable training techniques and
philosophy in their bestselling book, How to Be Your Dog's Best
Friend. First and foremost, the Monks--who themselves breed
and raise German shepherds in Upstate New York--emphasize that
"understanding is the key to communication, compassion, and
communion" with your dog. Outlined in seven highly readable
and informative chapters, the training principles offer a better
knowledge of your pet's psyche and personality--ultimately deepening
the bond between human and animal. Striving to educate and sensitize
new and potential owners to dog kind, the book explores different
breeds and temperaments, and assesses the best places from which
to obtain a dog. Thanks to a succession of neatly ordered chapters
and subsections on everything from crates and leash training
to dog treats and massage, training is made accessible and even
fun. The Monks lay particular emphasis on the importance of
training with "spirit, humor, and most of all, physical and
verbal praise!" Whether you're a new owner or an old-timer,

guides available, written with compassion, empathy, and humor.

The
Art of Raising a Puppy
by New Skete Monks
The monks
of New Skete have been breeding and training dogs at their New
York monastery for more than 20 years. Their philosophy of raising
dogs accentuates the essential human-canine bond, whereby owners
must learn to understand a dog's instincts, needs, and behavior.
Understanding a dog, the monks say, is the key to successfully
training him. They first published this philosophy in their
1978 classic guide How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend. Now the
monks concentrate on the first three months of a puppy's life
in The Art of Raising a Puppy. The book observes a litter of
monastery puppies from birth to 12 weeks. Tender photographs
and dialogue reflect these precious first few weeks of life.
Even at this time, the human-canine link is vital; the monks
stress the importance of gentle touch to help forge this connection.
Basic puppy training techniques are explored and executed, all
of which puppy owners should find easy to implement. Virtually
all types of dog problems and dog training are examined in the
book, always in compassionate and easily comprehensible language.
The monks also look well beyond surface training techniques
to analyze the roots of dogs' problems and explain how training
can help. Owners are taught how to gently assert dominance over
their dog, which will make for a long-lasting and fulfilling
relationship. Beautiful black-and-white photographs of monastery
puppies will pull at every heartstring. --Amazon.com |

Dog
Problems:
by Carol Lea Benjamin
Carol Lea
Benjamin, dog trainer extraordinaire and author of five books
devoted to dog behavior, shares her expertise in managing unruly
canines in Dog Problems. One quarter of America's 55
million pooches suffer from some form of serious behavioral
problem, and for all those frustrated owners, Benjamin's down-to-
earth, humane approach provides practical steps toward owning
a healthy, happy pet. Dog Problems outlines every conceivable
canine problem, from petty larceny to chronic leg lifting and
fear of random objects. Benjamin offers easily executable training
methods for each predicament. Cited are many encouraging examples
of cured dogs, such as Cybil, the timid German shepherd who,
thanks to Benjamin's training techniques, overcame her shyness
by learning to take walks with strangers. Dog Problems
entertains with lighthearted language and hilarious drawings
of dogs in compromising situations, all without detracting from
the solid, humane training techniques certain to help most problem
dogs. --Amazon.com |

The
Dog's Mind : Understanding Your Dog's Behavior
by Bruce Fogle
A friend was
having trouble with her dog, I was able to get out my "Understanding
Your Dog's Behavior" book and diagnose the problem and how to
fix it. I really like the section on separation anxiety. One
thing that Fogle says many times through the book is that "your
dog is learning even though you are not teaching". We may be
thinking we are training our dogs one thing but may be reinforcing
something else (a negative action) and not even realize it.

The
Dog Who Loved Too Much:
by Nicholas Dodman
Dog psychology
is a relatively new branch of veterinary science. Until 20 years
ago, treatment for undesired canine conduct was referred to
dog trainers. Dr. Dodman, professor at the renowned Tufts University
School of Veterinary Medicine, is an expert on domestic animal
behavioral and psychological research. His work with problem
dogs has led to humane therapies. Rather than putting a beloved
pet to sleep for seemingly unchangeable or dangerous behavior,
Dodman has diagnosed and successfully treated dogs for aggression,
noise phobia, elimination problems, obsessive licking, and separation
anxiety. By comparing canine and human brains, he has also prescribed
such psychotropic drugs as Prozac and buspirone to medicate
behavioral disorders. To get beyond irrational fears of window
shades and thunderstorms, desensitization (introducing an animal
to something it's afraid of in a slow, systematic manner) is
combined with carefully prescribed drugs. After a dog's behavior
changes for the better, the medication is often curtailed; generally,
none of the undesirable mannerisms returns. Dodman's findings
could provide solutions for owners who have nearly given up
hope for their unruly dogs. --Amazon.com |

If
Only You Knew How Much I Smell You : True Portraits of Dogs
by Valerie Shaff
Who hasn't
put words into their mutt's mouth? From "yes, the chicken-flavored
treats are my favorite," to "no, I'm not quite ready for my
bath," all dog devotees are guilty as charged--although not
all do it in such a hilarious and endearing manner as writer
Roy Blount Jr. and photographer Valerie Shaff in If Only You
Knew How Much I Smell You: True Portraits of Dogs. Blount,
humorist and author of Be Sweet, brings us closer to "understanding
the 'inner dog'" through his use of Doggerel, a uniquely Blount
brand of verse with the "canine measure somewhere between
ordered and free." The effect of this puppy poetry--when paired
with Shaff's truly remarkable duotone photographs of mixed
and pure breeds--is comic genius. A Boxer coyly stares into
the camera wondering, "What does that mean, 'expensive shoe'?
/ I ate it because it smelled like you," while a chubby-tummied
bulldog declares "Good stick. / Got a good stick. / A real
/ good / Stick. / Getting all the good / Out of this good
/ Stick / That's in / This / good / Stick." You'll never be
able to resist this entertaining and affectionate look at
our canine friends as "they ponder the confusions, certainties,
pangs, and pleasures of a dog's life." --Amazon.com
