A circular driveway leads you to the portico of the Cooney Mansion, built in 1908 for Lumber Baron Neil Cooney as a home and showcase for his mill's timber. Now a State and National Historic Register Landmark, its abundance of woodwork and turn-of-the-century Arts & Crafts Period furniture has been restored to its original splendor.
The Mansion was originally known as the "Spruce Cottage" (10,000 sq ft!) and offers a very relaxed atmosphere as a Bed & Breakfast Inn. It exudes an old fashioned warmth which adds to its popularity. A full three course "Lumber Baron's" breakfast is served at the massive original dining table. Afternoon and evening tea and coffee are also available.
The Mansion's beamed and paneled first floor includes a living room, dining room, main entryway, two parlors, and a sun-room. All are available for ceremonies and receptions. The lower level ballroom is ideal for larger functions and sit-down dinners.
There are five guest suites, each with a full private bathroom, and additional four bedrooms with a shared bath on the former "servant's floor." The Cooney Suite is over 600 square feet of total privacy and comfort, complete with fireplace, enclosed porch, sitting area, and a bathroom larger than most bedrooms -- complete with an old fashioned "Rainfall" showerhead.
To relax, guests may use the Jacuzzi, sauna, and exercise room, or curl up with a book from the extensive library, plug in a video from the innkeeper's collection, or take a turn on the player piano.
The Mansion's South Lawn is framed by a rose garden that is laced with clematis, lilac, and peonies. The North lawn features a rhododendron grove and a sprawling lawn surrounded by pine forest. The Mansion and its surrounding gardens make for captivating weddings and receptions of all kinds.
The Mansion is adjacent to the Mill Creek Park, with tennis courts, playgrounds, and walking trails around the trout stocked lake and waterfall. The Mansion also overlooks the public eighteen hole Highland Golf Course. ($1.00 a hole!)
From the Mansion, it is an easy drive to: ocean beaches, oyster farms, cranberry bogs, rain forests, a historic seaport, numerous antique shops, a nautical museum, and farmers' markets. Seasonal events include whale watching, "clamming," and many festivals, including logging and jazz fairs.
The Mansion hosts "A Dickens Family Christmas" the first two weeks in December. Special room packages are available for winter get-a-ways, kayaking , golfing, and bird watching. Mention this offer specifically for this special. "Sip-N-Chat" teas have become a popular springtime offering. Served English Style as you chat with the likes of Irma Bomback, Emily Dickenson or the Queen herself.
