Area Information
The county and bay called Grays Harbor located on the Olympic Peninsula
and the coast of Washington State, 49 miles west of Olympia, 109 miles
SouthWest of Seattle and 142 miles NorthWest of Portland- was named
for Captain Robert Gray. In 1792, Gray was the first "Hoquat"
(Indian dialect for "white man") to sail into this Harbor.
He and his crew were on a commerce venture aboard the ship Columbia
Redivivia. Captain Gray, sailing the Columbia, was also the first American
to circumnavigate the world. The contiguous cities, Aberdeen (meaning
"where two rivers merge"), Hoquiam (meaning "hungry for
wood"), and Cosmopolis (meaning "city of the world")
were established in the 1880's and 1890's and formed the commercial-industrial
core of the 1,918 square mile county. In regard to quality of life,
Grays Harbor is privilaged to have one of the finest in America. Resdients
enjoy a moderate marine climate that is among the most pleasant in the
world - in fact Grays Harbor's climate is ranked third in the US. Warm,
dry summers compliment the mild wet winters.
Grays Harbor ranked sixth in the nation for its environment, the breathtaking
beauty of the Olympic Peninsula affects people in ways unlike any other
place on earth.
Out ranking most micropolitan areas in the United States, availability
and value of housing in Grays Harbor is truly a local treasure. Housing
here is the second most affordable housing in the state.
